The golden rules of writing for review websitesThe answer is yes – but don’t expect to become a millionaire anytime soon (or ever!), and don’t expect it to be easy money. The money is certainly there to be earned but it takes a lot of time and effort to do so – and though moderately successful reviewer online I’m far from earning a living from it, and in fact I have yet to hear of anyone earning an actual living from it. Still, it’s worth the effort if you persevere. All review sites work basically the same way – you pick a product (there are various ways of getting products added if they’re not listed, these vary depending on the site), review it, and are given ratings by other members on how useful / helpful they found your review. This affects how highly your review is placed if there is more than one review on a particular product, theoretically the higher the rating, the more people see it, the more you can earn. This leads to GOLDEN RULE #1 – if you don’t rate other member’s reviews, very few will rate yours. At first you might not get very good ratings (typically the ratings range from “Very Helpful” right down to “Not Helpful” or even “Off Topic” if the review is not in the right place. GOLDEN RULE #2 – it IS worth making sure you get good ratings from the beginning, and spending time improving your writing to get good ratings. It pays off in the long run. The other way sites work out how “popular” you are is by how many people “trust” you – members can place you on their circle / web of trust / friends if they start to like you for whatever reason. GOLDEN RULE #3 is that you should only trust those who deserve it – those who consistently write good reviews and rate fairly. You should of course act the same way yourself. Otherwise, the only ones likely to trust you are those who really aren’t worth having the trust of anyway. Some review websites don’t actually pay you in hard cash, or others might only pay you a particular currency. Some you might even have to get an International Taxpayers Identification Number for, and yet others might not offer you payment at all if you don’t have a bank account in that country. There are of course a whole host that don’t pay you anything at all or only offer prize draw entries. This means that if you are serious about making some money out of reviewing for websites, GOLDEN RULE #4 is that you must RESEARCH A SITE before you spend a lot of time and effort on it – you want to be sure that the effort will be rewarded, after all. With all the effort and talent in the world though, there is always an element of chance in successful / popular you’ll be and how much money you’ll actually earn. This means that GOLDEN RULE #5 is the all-important one – PERSEVERE. Keep writing and posting reviews even if it doesn’t seem to be doing much at the time. You never really know what review might suddenly become popular or profitable, what might get you trusted by a few more people, what product you’ve just reviewed may suddenly become the must-have item of the year or achieve cult status. Finally, GOLDEN RULE #6 – if all of the above sounds like far too much effort, get yourself a paper round instead!
