Title: Cubert Badbone, PI
OverviewDeirdra Kiai, or Squinky as she likes to be known (odd girl), is of course the somewhat genius-like creature who brought us TGTTPOACS (The Game That Takes Place On A Cruise Ship). Previously she developed this little gem, which although not up to the quality of the later game, is still very much worth playing for any adventure game fan.On an island in space somewhere (or something like that), there is a problem - all of the human tourists, who are vital to the isaland's economy, are disappearing. What turns out to be the last human on the island comes into Cubert Badbone's office asking for help, but he at first refuses, being prejudiced against humans. However he will become drawn into the hunt and uncover a fiendish plan, with or without the help of Benjy, his extremely strange receptionist. In his quest to find the humans he will visit locations on and underneath the island, meet strange people, solve puzzles, and work out what on earth those dancing elephants are for... Cubert Badbone PI is a smallish game, I would expect most people to complete it in a couple of hours without hints (though walkthroughs are available on the author's website, including one in Italian which is what you always wanted isn't it? Come on now, admit it...) - but it's a very enjoyable two hours. (Enjoyable on replaying as well, I found.) The music (also by Deirdra, who is unfairly talented) is great - a terrific jazz sioundtrack that's worth playing the game for in itself (if you like jazzz, anyway). The graphics are monochromatic and again quite simple, but they do the job very well and lend a certain style and atosphere to the game. Most of the puzzles are fairly easy, one or two will have you stumped for a while, but they're well balanced. It's one of those games that doesn't demand too much from you but rewards you with a lot of enjoyment. As you might expect if you've ever played TGTTPOACS, there is a lot of humour in the game which is pretty surreal (this is a good thing!). Many of the characters are very oddd - a disco cat with a huge afro, a blind psychic piano player, and more... The plot is consistently inventive throughout the game, and once you've completed it you will be glad you did, though you'll probably be wishing it had lasted a bit longer. More replayable that most adventure games though.
ProsFunny, surreal, good puzzles, stylistic graphics, great music.
ConsRather short.
VerdictAnother triumph from Deirdra Kiai Productions!! (When's her third game coming out?!?!)
